COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
A boisterous crowd helped the University of Maryland men and women's basketball teams tip off the 2005-06 season on Friday night when the Comcast Center celebrated Maryland Madness.
Both new versions of the Maryland men's and women's teams were introduced to the crowd, which were treated to speeches by head coaches Gary Williams and Brenda Frese.
In addition to the basketball introductions and brief scrimmages, the fans were treated to performances by the Spirit Squad, the varsity competitive cheer team and the Maryland Gymkana Troupe.
Former Terp standouts Jerrod Mustaf and Exree Hipp were among the more than 15 Maryland basketball alumni who returned to play in the annual Maryland Madness Alumni Game.
Fans were asked to bring canned food items as a donation to the Capital Area Food Bank. Members of Maryland's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and staff from the Terps' Academic Support and Career Development Unit were on hand to assist in the effort.
University of Maryland student Max Dauarman was the lucky winner of a new car - a Scion tC.
