COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The season officially tips off this weekend when the 14th-ranked Maryland women's basketball team travels to Siena on Friday, Nov. 18. The Terps then come home to host Xavier on Sunday, Nov. 20 at 2 p.m. in Comcast Center.
Siena will be hosting an ACC team at the Alumni Recreation Center for the first time in the program's history. The Terps will also be the highest-ranked team they have hosted. The game marks the second-ever meeting between the teams. Last season, the Saints traveled to Comcast Center to open the 2004-05 campaign.
Under the direction of fourth-year head coach Brenda Frese, Maryland earned a No. 14 preseason ranking and remained in that spot for the second week in a row. The Terps return nine letterwinners from last season's 22-10 team, including starters Crystal Langhorne, the 2005 ACC Rookie of the Year, and Shay Doron, a Kodak/WBCA Honorable Mention All-American last season. Both are also Wade Trophy and John R. Wooden Award candidates. Each award is presented to the nation's top women's collegiate basketball player.
The Terps take to the Comcast Center floor for the first time this season when they host the Musketeers, also the second meeting between the teams. Xavier is making their first trip to College Park.
The Musketeers were selected to finish second in the Atlantic 10 in a preseason media and coaches poll. Last year, they claimed a share of the A-10 West title and advanced to the quarterfinals of the WNIT.
