COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- For the third time in as many years, the Maryland Terrapins will take on the St. John's Red Storm in the NCAA Tournament. The Terps and Red Storm will kickoff from Ludwig Field at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 27. The winner of Sunday's game will advance to the quarterfinals and will play for a berth in the 2005 College Cup in Cary, N.C.
The Terps and Red Storm met in the College Cup in 2003 (a 1-0 SJU win) and last year in the quarterfinals (a 1-0 MD win).
LiveStats (www.ncaasports.com) will be available for Sunday's game and live audio will be broadcast on wmucsports.com.
The Terrapins (16-4-1) advanced to the third round with a 1-0 win over Brown in the second round. The Red Storm defeated Marist, 3-1, in the first round and picked up a 1-0 win over 16th-seeded Dartmouth in the second round.
The Terps are seeking their fourth consecutive trip to the national semifinals and their first NCAA title since 1968.
Over the past three seasons, Maryland is 9-0-1 at home in the NCAA Tournament. The tie came last season against Creighton and the Terps managed to advance on penalty kicks.
St. John's leads the all-time series with the Terps, 3-2. Two of those three victories have come in the NCAA Tournament (1999, 2003). Maryland has won the last two meetings -- both in 2004 and both at Ludwig Field.
In last season's quarterfinal game, A.J. Godbolt's header in the 73rd proved to be the difference as the Terrapins advanced to their third straight College Cup. In the regular season meeting between the two teams, Godbolt had three assists and Jason Garey scored a hat trick in a 5-2 win over the Red Storm.
The winner of Sunday's game will take on either Akron or Connecticut in the quarterfinals.
Maryland/Brown Postgame Notes
Maryland advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament with a 1-0 win over Brown. It was the first-ever meeting between the two schools ... Marc Burch's goal was the third of the season and the 10th of his career ... it was also his second game-winner of the year (the other was against Virginia Tech) ... the assist was A.J. Godbolt's 12th of the season - which ranks tied for fourth in a season at Maryland with Carlos Martin in 1961 ... Jason Garey's 12-game point streak came to a halt against Brown ... the last time he did not register a goal or an assist was Sept. 25 ... Chris Seitz picked up his first career NCAA Tournament win against the Bears ... Seitz was forced to make an early save to prevent a deficit for the Terps. He finished with three saves ... David Glaudemans earned the start at left back - his first start since Oct. 14 against North Carolina ... he played 87 minutes against the Bears ... Maryland is now 15-0-1 when scoring the game's first goal this season ... the Terps have won four straight one-goal games. Maryland is 4-2 in games decided by one goal (1-0 outcomes to NC State and Penn State) ... four Terps made their NCAATournament debut: Seitz, Kevin Tangney, Graham Zusi and A.J. Delagarza.
Tournament Notes
Maryland is making its 25th appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Terps are 29-23-3 all-time in the NCAA Tournament. Maryland shared the 1968 national title with Michigan State.
Sasho Cirovski is making his 11th trip to the NCAA Tournament in 13 seasons as head coach of the Terrapins. Cirovski is 17-10-1 in the NCAA Tournament at Maryland and has led the Terrapins to four College Cup appearances (1998, 2002-04).
The Terps have seven players that have started in the NCAA Tournament. Combined, the group has 60 NCAA Tournament starts. Defender Chris Lancos has started every NCAA Tournament game Maryland has played since 2002 (13 starts).
Maryland has faced 11 of the 48 tournament teams this season. The Terps are 9-4-1 against those teams (Maryland played Duke and Wake Forest twice).
The Terrapins are one of a record eight teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference in the NCAA Tournament. Maryland won the ACC regular season title with a record of 7-1 in the league.
Quick Kicks
Prior to the Brown game, Maryland's last 1-0 victory came on Sept. 25 against William & Mary. That hard fought victory, which was similar to the one against the Bears, helped spark an 11-game unbeaten streak.
Maryland is 15-0-1 this season when scoring first. The team's lone come-from-behind win this season came against Virginia Tech (11/4).
All four of Maryland's losses (and the one tie) this season have come to teams in this year's NCAA Tournament. None of those teams are in Maryland's quarter of the bracket. Three of the teams that defeated Maryland were eliminated (NC State, Duke and UCLA) and Indiana, which tied Maryland, also did not advance. The only team to defeat Maryland this season that is still alive is Penn State.
The Terps have not faced any of the teams in their quarter of the bracket this season. (Maryland did play Akron, the tournament's eighth seed, in the preseason.)
Maryland has gone to penalty kicks twice in NCAA Tournament history. The Terps won the last time, edging Creighton 5-4 in 2004, but lost the other in 1995 to James Madison, 4-3.
The Terps' scoring average of 2.80 goals per game is second in the country.
Maryland's 57 goals this season rank third all-time in school history. The Terps set the record for goals in a season last year with 62.
Maryland has been shutout three times this season (all losses). The last shutout against Maryland was Sept. 25 vs. NC State. The last time Maryland was shut out at home was in last year's NCAA third round game against Creighton.
Start Me Up
The Terps are 15-0-1 this season when scoring the game's first goal. Maryland is outscoring opponents 28-9 in the first half this season.
In all four of Maryland's losses, not only have the Terps not gotten a lead, they have given up a goal in the game's first 15 minutes.
Feast Or Famine
In three of Maryland's four losses, the Terps have been shut out. In the Terrapin wins, though, Maryland is averaging over three goals a game (3.22).
Home Sweet Home
The Terps have had remarkable success at Ludwig Field posting a 46-3-2 (.922) record in three plus seasons, including a perfect 13-0 mark in 2002 and 10-0-1 record this season.
That record also includes an 9-0-1 mark during the NCA A Tournament which has helped Maryland reach three straight College Cups. (The Terps advanced on penalty kicks, 5-4, after tying Creighton in the third round of the NCAA Tournament.)
Maryland won 23 straight games at home between 2002-03, the fourth-longest streak in NCAA history.
Maryland is 10-0-1 this season and is unbeaten in its last 17 games at Ludwig Field (dating back to last season).
A Ludwig Field record of 6,203 fans came to watch the Terps play Indiana on Oct. 29, 2005.
For the first time since the Terps started playing at Ludwig Field in 1995, Maryland averaged over 2,000 fans per game during the 2004 season. Maryland is again averaging over 2,000 fans per game this season (2,250).
Maryland's loyal student fan base perched behind the goals is known as "The Crew."
