COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland head women's basketball coach Brenda Frese announced today that Demauria Liles and Emery Wallace have signed National Letters of Intent to play for the Terrapins beginning the fall of 2006. Liles, from Maryland, and Wallace, hailing from Virginia, both come to College Park with impressive high school credentials.
"We are extremely excited with our recruiting class as they will provide our team with a lot of depth and versatility," said Frese, who enters her fourth season with the Terrapins. "Both Demauria and Emery can play multiple positions, are very competitive and come from proven winning basketball programs. What I love about this class is that they both committed to us early and wanted to be a part of our highly successful program. They are going to have outstanding careers at Maryland."
A 6-1 forward, Demauria Liles helped Riverdale Baptist High School in Upper Marlboro, Md., to a 30-1 record last season and a No. 3 national ranking by the USA Today. Last season, she averaged 17 points, 14 rebounds, three blocks and four assists per game during her junior campaign. She was an Honorable Mention All-American by Street & Smith's and participated in the 2005 USA Youth Development Festival. A Laurel, Md., native, Liles is a two-time adidas All-American and was an adidas All-Star last year. She was also named Most Outstanding Player of Team Excel (AAU).
"Demauria is another great addition to our team and continues our commitment to sign the best local talent," said Frese. "She comes from a national high school powerhouse and will do what it takes to win. She is the ultimate team player. At 6-1, she's an athletic and versatile forward that can play inside and out. She can score, defend and rebound and will be a very exciting player to watch."
Emery Wallace, a 6-2 forward, has had a successful high school career at Hidden Valley High School in Roanoke, Va. She has amassed 1,256 career points through three seasons, averaging 19.3 points and 7.0 rebounds per game as a junior. She was the 2005 River Ridge District Player of the Year and was selected Region III first team, second team all-state and first team All-Timesland twice. The Timesland also tabbed Wallace, a native of Roanoke, Va., a Sizzlin' Sophomore in 2004.
"Our staff targeted Emery very early in the recruiting process. A forward, she is extremely skilled and has a very accurate shooting touch," remarked Frese. "Her leadership, work ethic and confidence are valuable attributes she brings with her. Emery is never satisfied and will push our team daily with her tenacity. Emery will have an outstanding career here at Maryland."
The Maryland Terrapins are coming off a 22-10 season and a second-straight trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The team, who is ranked 14th in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches and the Associated Press preseason polls, opens the 2005-06 with an exhibition game vs. EA Sports on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 6 p.m.
