COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Coppin State makes its ninth-consecutive trip to College Park, when the No. 9/8 Terrapin women's basketball team hosts the Lady Eagles on Tuesday, Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. Maryland, who is the nation's top-scoring team, will look to keep its perfect record against Coppin State intact.
Coppin State will be the fourth team the Terps will have faced who advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season. Maryland has won all 10 meetings between the teams, all of which were played in College Park.
Maryland, who has won its last four games, is coming off a 92-67 victory over Pac-10 power Arizona. The Terps are averaging 93.1 points per game, currently the highest scoring average in the nation. Head coach Brenda Frese continues to get balanced scoring on a nightly basis, as five different players are averaging double figures, led by freshman Marissa Coleman's (Cheltenham, Md./St. John's College [D.C.]) 17.4 ppg.
The Terps have seen a dramatic improvement in their three-point shooting. Last year, Maryland ranked sixth in the ACC in the category at 32 percent. This season, the team's 43.9 shooting percentage from behind the arc is not only the best in the league, but is also the fifth-best shooting percentage in the country.
Coleman's outstanding 57.1 percent shooting from behind the arc leads the team and is among the top 20 in the nation. Junior Shay Doron (Great Neck, N.Y./Christ the King) has also made an impressive turnaround in her three-point shooting. She is averaging 45.5 percent from beyond the arc, currently a career best, and among the top 10 in the ACC. Freshman Kristi Toliver (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) and sophomore Ashleigh Newman (Shelbyville, Tenn./Shelbyville Area) are also among the top 15 in the conference in three-point shooting.
The Lady Eagles (1-3) are led by 2005 MEAC Coach of the Year Derek Brown, who is in his seventh season at the helm. He guided Coppin State to an NCAA Tournament berth, along with the help of 2005 MEAC Player of the Year Sherrie Tucker. CSC also returns conference All-Rookie selection Rashida Suber.
Tickets for the game can be purchased in advance at www.umterps.com or at the Comcast Center ticket window. The ticket office opens one hour prior to tip-off.
