Davis and Jackson Named AP All-Americans

Dec. 13, 2005

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Associated Press announced its list of 2005 All-Americans and Maryland's Vernon Davis and D'Qwell Jackson each earned mention. Davis, the tight end from Washington, D.C., was named to the organization's first team, while Jackson was a second team selection.

Surprisingly, Davis is the first Terrapin offensive player -- from a school rich in tradition on the offensive side of the ball -- named to the team since 1955 when center Bob Pelligrini earned the honor. He is the 11th first teamer in school history and the first since E.J. Henderson in 2002.

"This is a great honor for me and, I feel, a big accomplishment," Davis said. "I appreciate the writers who voted for me and recognized my play. I think this is a sign of where the Maryland program continues to move and it is good for the younger players to come in and see what it takes from a work standpoint to become an All-American. I am very proud of that."

Davis led the ACC in receiving yards this year, compiling 871 yards on 51 receptions with six touchdowns en route to being named a finalist for the John Mackey Award.

Jackson was named to the AP's second team, the school's first named to that team since LB Eric Wilson -- the school's all-time leading tackler -- made the list in 1984. Jackson was the ACC's leading tackler for the second year in a row and named the league's Defensive Player of the Year. He was also a finalist for the Bednarik Award and a first team selection by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), as was Davis.
