COLLEGE PARK, Md. - For the fourth-consecutive week, the Maryland women's basketball team is ranked among the top 10 in the nation in the Associated Press poll, earning a No. 6 rating this week. Head coach Brenda Frese has guided the Terps to a 9-1 record so far this season with four more games to go before the ACC slate begins.
The ranking is the highest for the Terps since being ranked No. 5 on Jan. 19, 1993. That season, Maryland began the year at No. 4, spending 11-consecutive weeks among the top 10 in the AP poll.
Since being edged 80-75 by No. 1 Tennessee at the Paradise Jam, Maryland has won its last five games. One of the top scoring teams in the nation, averaging 90.7 points per game, the only team in the country to have a better scoring average than the Terps is second-ranked Duke (95.1). Both are also the only two teams in the nation averaging over 90 points a game.
Maryland's potent offensive, which has five players averaging double figures, has reached the 100-point mark three times this season and has scored at least 90 points five times, the most since 1992-93. That season, the Terps were over 90 points seven times.
The Terrapins are one of three ACC teams among the top six in the poll. North Carolina is ranked fifth. League-newcomer Boston College entered the top 25 for the first time this season and is ranked 23rd. Maryland already defeated Michigan State, who is ranked 11th this week.
Maryland is back in action this Thursday, Dec. 22, when it travels to nearby George Mason. It will be the first meeting between the teams since 1990 and only the third overall. Tip off is at 7 p.m.
