COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland linebacker D'Qwell Jackson, the 2005 ACC Defensive Player of the Year, will play in the 2006 Senior Bowl, presented by Food World.
Bowl officials announced the addition of Jackson, a first-team All-American selection on teams chosen by the AFCA and the Sporting News and a second-team choice by the Associated Press, to this year's roster on Saturday.
A finalist for the Bednarik Award, presented to the nation's top defensive player, Jackson posted 137 total tackles in ten games, 56 solo, and added 6.5 tackles for loss, four sacks and a pair of interceptions to earn the league's coveted top defensive player award.
His 13.7 tackles per game average led the conference for the second straight year and ranked second in the nation among all NCAA Division I-A defenders in 2005.
The 6-1, 231-pounder from Largo, Fla., had five games with 15 or more tackles during the year, topped by a career-high 18 tackle performance against Navy which earned him ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week honors.
He also had 16 tackles against Clemson and Boston College, 15 against West Virginia and Florida State, turned in nine double-digit tackle games and led the Terrapin defense in tackles in nine of the ten games he played.
A runner-up for the ACC Defensive Player of the Year Award as a junior in 2004 when he also led the ACC with 137 tackles, Jackson finished his career with 447 total tackles, fourth most in school history, and added 24 tackles for loss, 10.5 quarterback sacks and six interceptions.
The Senior Bowl is the nation's premier pre-draft showcase, annually featuring the top senior NFL draft prospects on teams coached by the entire coaching staffs of two National Football League teams.
Senior Bowl practices are also attended by over 700 NFL general managers, head coaches, scouts and other front office personnel each year.
In 2005, ten Senior Bowlers were chosen in the first-round of the NFL Draft and 83 players were drafted overall.
The 2006 Senior Bowl will kickoff at 3:00 p.m. in Mobile's Ladd-Peebles Stadium on January 28, and the game will be nationally-televised by ESPN.
