Six Terps Named To Face-Off's Preseason All-America Teams

Dec. 27, 2005

College Park, Md. - Seniors Joe Walters and Bill McGlone were named to Face-Off's preseason All-America first team and four other Terps were named as the team's were announced today by Inside Lacrosse.

Senior midfielder Brendan Healy was named to the preseason third team, along with junior goalie Harry Alford and junior defender Steve Whittenberg. Junior defender Ray Megill was named a preseason honorable mention All-American.

Walters, a second team All-American last year, is the only current collegiate player to be named to the 2006 U.S. National team. He has led the Terps in scoring in each of his three seasons in College Park, including 53 points this past season on 38 goals and 15 assists to lead Maryland to the NCAA Final Four. During the 2005 season, Walters became just the 14th player in Maryland men's lacrosse history to score more than 100 goals in his career and is currently tied for sixth on the school's all-time goal scoring list with 117, just 32 shy of Matt Hahn's school record of 149 goals.

McGlone, a first team All-American in 2005, is coming off of a tremendous 2005 season that saw him finish the year second on the team with 26 goals and tied for second with 33 points.

Healy was one of only four players to start every game for the Terps last season and set career highs for goals in a season with 20 and points with 28, which matched his career total coming into the 2005 season.

Alford, a native of Washington, D.C., enjoyed a tremendous first season as the Terrapins' starting goalie, making 191 saves in 2005, which ranks 10th on the single-season record chart. He had 11 games with double-digit saves and was named MVP of the ACC Tournament.

Whittenberg, a transfer from the Air Force Academy, made an immediate impact in his first season with the Terps. The Lake Braddock, Va., native, was fifth on the team with 40 groundballs and led the squad with 22 caused turnovers.

Megill, who began last season sidelined with an injured ankle, joined the starting line-up for the Terps following the loss to Dartmouth and made an impact with his athleticism and toughness. The all-ACC Tournament team selection was second on the team with 18 caused turnovers and eighth with 26 groundballs.

In other rankings released by Face-Off, Maryland is fourth in the preseason coaches' poll, behind Johns Hopkins, Duke and Virginia. Maryland did receive one first-place vote in the poll, which is taken from surveys from 55 DI coaches, the largest sampling for any Division I poll. The Terps were also picked to finish tied with Virginia for second in the ACC behind Duke.
