COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Sixth-ranked Maryland welcomes Central Connecticut State, Furman and UMES for the annual Terrapin Classic on Dec. 29 and 30. Games will be played at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., with the Terps playing in the 7 p.m. game on both nights.
Maryland is coming off a small break after claiming a 70-33 victory at George Mason on Dec. 22. The Terps play Central Connecticut State on the first day of the Classic, as Maryland looks to claim its third-consecutive tournament title. It will be the first meeting between the teams. Furman and instate-foe UMES will get things started on Thursday night at 5 p.m. UMES lost to the Terrapins in the championship game of the 2003 tournament.
Maryland is looking for its seventh-consecutive victory when they take to the floor vs. CCSU. The Terrapins' defense has been stifling in the last two games, limiting its last two opponents to less than 40 points, the first time that has happened since the 1973-74 season.
After sophomore Ashleigh Newman's (Shelbyville, Tenn./Shelbyville Area) 21-point outing vs. the Patriots, six different Terrapins are now averaging double figures. Freshman Marissa Coleman (Cheltenham, Md./St. John's College [D.C.]) is the team's leader with 17.2 points per game, followed by junior Shay Doron's (Great Neck, N.Y./Christ the King) 15.4 ppg and sophomore Crystal Langhorne's (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro) 15.0 ppg. Freshman Kristi Toliver (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) and sophomore Laura Harper (Elkins Park, Pa./Cheltenham) are averaging 11.3 ppg and 10.6 ppg, respectively, while Newman is just above the 10.0 mark at 10.1 ppg. Maryland is the second-highest scoring team in the nation, averaging 88.8 ppg.
