WASHINGTON, D.C. -
American overcame three forfeits on its way to a 23-21 win over Maryland Sunday evening at Bender Arena in Washington, D.C. The Terps' Adam James was the only Terp to win a wrestled bout on the day.
With the action beginning at 149 lbs., AU's Christopher Stout was set to wrestle Maryland's Andrew Schlaffer. Stout went down 2-0 before cutting Schlaffer's lead to one on an escape. Stout took his opponent down late in the first frame to take a 3-2 lead. The start of the third began with a 3-3 tie and Stout on the bottom. After an escape gave the AU freshman a 4-3 advantage, a takedown on a failed Schlaffer shot gave Stout a 6-4 lead. Another takedown gave him a 8-4 lead but at the end of the match, Stout won 9-5.
James and AU's Tom Kniezewski wrestled to a 0-0 tie through the first three minutes, but James tallied the first point on an escape at the beginning of the second. James scored the first takedown of the match with 53 seconds left, after a penalty point to Kniezewski to go up 4-0. James had to take an injury timeout on a successful Kniezewski shot and a stalling call put the AU junior within one of his opponent. James scored a late takedown and a flurry of moves from Kniezewski couldn't take the Terp down.
The Terps lost the next five weight classes, including one by fall and one by technical fall, to seal its dual fate. Jeff Oldham (125), Sean Carr (133) and Charlie Pinto (141) were credited with victories with Eagle forfeits at those weight classes.
The Terps will be back in action at Comcast Pavilion on Friday, Feb. 18, against George Mason at 7:30 p.m.
