Maryland Basketball Postgame Notes
Duke 60, Maryland 49
No. 19/21 Maryland fell to No. 3/4 Duke, 60-49 in an intense Atlantic Coast Conference matchup Sunday afternoon. The Terps are now 31-26 all-time against the Blue Devils, but have dropped the last 11 meetings. In their previous matchup, the Blue Devils edged the Terps, 60-57, in Durham on Jan. 27. The Terps dropped to 17-6 overall and 6-5 in the conference.
With a crowd of 17,243 at Comcast Center, Maryland broke its own all-time ACC mark for single-game attendance. The Terps set the previous mark with 14,500 fans against border rival Virginia on Feb. 12, 1992 at storied Cole Fieldhouse.
Kalika France and Shay Doron got the Terps rolling early, scoring the team's first eight points on a combined 4-of-9 shooting.
The Maryland defense held Duke scoreless for a stretch of 5:06 in the first half. During the spurt, in which the Terps took a 12-8 lead, the Blue Devils missed all eight of their field goal attempts.
Duke was up 27-23 at halftime. Wanisha Smith led the Blue Devils in scoring with eight points, including a pair of threes. For Maryland, France had seven points and Doron and Crystal Langhorne both contributed six. Langhorne also recorded a team-high seven rebounds.
The Terps opened the second half on a 9-0 run to seize a five-point advantage. Doron scored five points and France and Jade Perry added two a piece.
Duke stormed back with a 10-0 run of its own to reclaim the lead at 37-32. Monique Currie, Jessica Foley, Wanisha Smith, Chante Black and Wynter Whitley all scored two points for the Blue Devils during the run, which began with 14:46 remaining.
Currie, a Washington, D.C. native, had a team-high 14 points for the Blue Devils, who pulled away late in the second half. Doron had a game-high 18 for Maryland, to go along with six rebounds and three assists. With 436 points this season, Doron is now fifth on the school scoring list for sophomores.
Several members of the Maryland men's basketball team, which knocked off the No. 7/8 Blue Devils, 99-92, in an overtime thriller last night, were in attendance this afternoon. Nik Caner-Medley, Chris McCray, Ekene Ibekwe, Mike Jones, Sterling Ledbetter, Darien Henry and Head Coach Gary Williams were among those present to cheer on their fellow Terps.
