
Anesia Smith Named Finalist for Lieberman Award

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland senior Anesia Smith was named one of 10 finalist for the Nancy Lieberman Award given to the nation's top point guard. Smith, a native of Alexandria, Va., is averaging 7.2 assists per game this season, the third-best assists average in the nation.
Smith is having the best season of her career. Her 7.2 helpers per game is more than three times her career average coming into the season. Smith has dished out 164 assists this season, the fifth-most in school history. The ACC's assist leader, she also leads the conference with a 2.08 assist-to-turnover ratio.
The Nancy Lieberman Award enters its sixth year and continues building national recognition. The award is a national project of the Rotary Club of Detroit honoring the nation's top collegiate point guard in women's Division I basketball. The criterion for the award is the floor leadership, play-making and ball-handling skills that personified Hall of Famer, Nancy Lieberman during her career. Sportswriters from across the country select three finalists and one winner at the end of March 2005. The three finalists and one winner will be announced during the Final Four Weekend (April 3-5th, 2005) and the winner will be invited to attend the award luncheon in Detroit, Michigan.

Smith has helped the Maryland Terrapins to a 17-6 record overall and a 6-5 mark in ACC play. The Terps return to action on Thusday, Feb. 17 at Miami (Fla.).
