COLLEGE PARK, Md. - University of Maryland head football coach Ralph Friedgen announced the appointing of current defensive line coach Dave Sollazzo as the Terrapins' recruiting coordinator. Sollazzo replaces James Franklin, the team's former wide receiver coach who left this past weekend to take a similar post with the Green Bay Packers.
"Dave has done a very good job for us in every area I have asked," said Friedgen. "He is a guy who wanted the position and is very enthusiastic about it and I have every confidence he will do a great job heading our recruiting efforts."
Sollazzo joined the Terrapin staff when Friedgen was appointed head coach at the end of the 2000 season. In his four years, the Terp defensive line has produced National Football League players such as Charles Hill and Randy Starks and in 2005 will feature the nation's top defensive end recruit, Melvin Alaeze.
"I am very excited about this new position," said Sollazzo. "Since Coach Friedgen has taken over here and under his vision and direction, this program has become one of the elite programs in the country. In addition, recruiting in the ACC -- which I think is the premier football conference in the country -- is a tremendous challenge and I am excited about my new role."
Friedgen and his staff are still in the process of seeking a replacement for Franklin's old post as wide receiver coach.
