
Newcomer Leads Terps in Spring Opener

AIKEN, S.C. - Transfer Tully Coyle finished with a 54-hole total of 227 to lead University of Maryland golfers Tuesday at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Invitational men's tournament.
The event was the spring-season opener for the Terrapin men's golf squad.
Coyle, a transfer student from the University of Tulsa, tied for 31st place in the tournament. Playing for Maryland for the first time, he shot rounds of 77-73-77 to pace his new team.
John Eades tied for 39th with a 228 total, firing an opening-round 70 to mark Maryland's best 18-hole score of the event.
Also for Maryland, Tyler Witman fired a 235 to place 55th, closing with his best round of the tournament at 75. Freshman J.J. Occi was 61st at 239 after shooting 74 on Tuesday, while Bobby MacWhinnie finished 62nd at 240.
As a team, the Terrapins finished 12th in the field with a 54-hole total of 923. The Terps' best round as a team came on Tuesday, when they shot 303.
Host South Carolina-Aiken tied Houston for team honors, each with an 873 total. Houston's Jordan Irwin shot a 1-under-par total of 212 to take medalist honors, one shot better than USC-Aiken's Clint Smith.
