COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland sophomore Shay Doron was selected as one of six members of the Kodak/WBCA Region II All-American Women's Basketball Team which was released on Monday by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). She is the first Terrapin to earn the honor in 12 years and just the ninth overall. Doron, along with 47 other players from eight regions, are finalists for the 12-member Kodak All-America team which will be announced on April 2, 2005 in Indianapolis.
Doron (Great Neck, N.Y./Christ the King) has followed up a successful freshman campaign with a stellar sophomore season. Leading the team in scoring with 17.6 points per game, she was named first team All-ACC, becoming the first Terp since Bonnie Rimkus in 1994 to earn first team all-conference nods.
Having scored 527 points this season, tied for the seventh-most single-season point total in school history, she broke Maryland's sophomore class scoring record. She has also broken the school record for free throws made (138), a mark which she set just one season ago. On Jan. 16, she tied the school's single-game scoring record when she netted 39 points, just five days after netting 37 in the upset of current ACC Champion North Carolina.
This season, Doron has scored 20 or more points 11 times. She has ranked among the top five in the ACC in scoring the entire season, while also appearing in the top 15 in free throw percentage (8th, .798), assists (15th, 3.27) and steals (11th, 2.03). On Jan. 10, she was named ACC Player of the Week.
Joining Doron on the Region II team are Duke's Monique Curry, Shareese Grant of Old Dominion, Roneeka Hodges from Florida State, Tamara James from Miami and UNC's Ivory Latta.
The Terps earned a No. 7 seed in the Philadelphia Region of the NCAA Tournament. Maryland will host the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament on March 20 & 22. First-round action tips off at noon on Sunday with No. 2-seed Ohio State vs. No. 15-seed Holy Cross.
