GAME: No. 10 Wisconsin-Green Bay (27-3) vs. No. 7 Maryland (21-9).
REGIONAL: Philadelphia, First Round.
TIME: Sunday, 2:30 p.m. EST.
SITE: Comcast Center; College Park, Md.
Maryland hopes to take full advantage of playing at the Comcast Center when
it meets Wisconsin-Green Bay in the first round.
With its home court selected as a site for first- and second-round games
back in July, Maryland figured it wouldn't have to travel after winning 21
games - its highest total since 1992-93.
The Terrapins went 12-3 at home this season, a record they hope to improve
on with two more victories.
"We hope its going to be a big boost," Maryland guard Kalika France said.
"Everyone wants to play on their home court because you usually have a better
record at home than you do on the road. You play with more confidence and the
crowd behind you helps you."
With two sophomores and two freshmen in the starting lineup, Maryland
believes it is a program on the rise. The Terrapins were perennial contenders
in the 1980s, reaching the Final Four in 1982 and 1989.
Last year, Maryland beat Miami in the first round before losing to Louisiana
State.
"We've worked very hard to establish a tradition," sophomore guard Shay
Doron said. " This is a great program and we want to stand alongside the men
and share their success."
Atlantic Coast Conference rookie of the year Crystal Langhorne is a major
reason why Maryland is on the way up. Langhorne put up 17.0 points and 10.5
rebounds per game to become the first ACC player to average a double-double for
an entire season since Wake Forest's Tracy Connor in 1993.
The Terrapins have split their last eight games, including a 74-44 loss to
Duke in the semifinals of the ACC tournament on March 6.
Wisconsin-Green Bay won the Horizon League for the fourth straight season by
beating Wright State 58-48 on March 7. Tiffany Mor notched her second straight
double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, and was named tournament MVP.
The Phoenix have advanced past the first round just once, beating Washington
two years ago. Last season, they fell to Houston in the first round.
Wisconsin-Green Bay is known for its defense, which is limiting teams to
55.3 points - good for 24th in the country.
"They are a very hard-working team," Maryland coach Brenda Frese said.
"They play a lot of zone. They don't turn the ball over a lot. It'll be a good
matchup."
Maryland and Wisconsin-Green Bay have never met. The Phoenix are 3-2
all-time against current ACC teams.
