Pregame Press Conference Quotes: Maryland

March 19, 2005

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Pregame Quotes
Brenda Frese, Maryland Head Coach

On how to play UW-Green Bay: They are so patient and they don't turn the ball over a lot and they do use a lot of the shot clock, but that's going to be up to us to play great team defense, possibly try to speed up the game a little more. You need to value every possession, and this time of year it's going to come down defensively to us being able to guard. We're really going to have to come out and defend, especially against the three.

On focusing on defense the past week in practice: We just really feel like that wins championships. From the ACC tournament we gained a lot in our first two games against Clemson and NC State on the defensive end. Although offensively we do have a lot of weapons, we really feel that overall our team defense has been where we've needed to spend the most time.

On how the ACC Tournament prepared Maryland for the NCAA run: We gained so many positives out of the first two rounds, and gained a lot of confidence both on the offense and defense at the right time in the season. The ACC Tournament run really prepares your team for the NCAA Tournament.

Freshman Center Crystal Langhorne Preparations defensively: Recently in our practices our coaches have had us working on defending the three and transitions. They use a lot of shot clock, and we have to continue to play defense for the whole 30 seconds.

Sophomore Guard Shay Doron On playing in the NCAA Tournament: We are happy to be here, but we are not satisfied just being here. Last year we weren't either, and obviously we proved that by going out and playing with all our heart and putting it out there. I think this year it's going to be a similar thing. We have goals in mind, first and foremost to surpass last year. We can't overlook any team, all 64 teams are great teams here in the tournament. We have to come ready to play every day.

On UW-Green Bay: They do a lot of passing and moving and it's hard to scout teams like that. We just have to play great team defense and communicate. That's the best way to play a team like that.

Senior Guard Anesia Smith On UW-Green Bay: They obviously do a great job from the three-point line. We've struggled with that this year but that's been our main focus since we've been off, is guarding the three. That'll be our focal point for the game on Sunday.
