Postgame Press Conference Quotes: Maryland

March 20, 2005

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland Postgame Quotes vs. Wisconsin-Green Bay
Head Coach Brenda Frese

On the victory: I'm extremely proud of our team against a scrappy hard nosed Wisconsin-Green Bay team that we had so much respect for going into this game, and even a greater appreciation coming out. Just proud of the way we came out and defended. Our game plan was to take away the number of three's that they were going to shoot in this game and we did a tremendous job on the defensive end and really played an inspired game today.

On Maryland's play in the second half: There were a lot of points where we really picked it up. With the enthusiasm, the crowd noise, the energy, I thought they did a tremendous job. I think that with Wisconsin-Green Bay, with their strength and their scrappiness, they made you work for every loose ball, every rebound. We did a tremendous job valuing the basketball and valuing our possessions.

On players stepping up in big games: Big time players come out and put their team on their back. Our two leading scorers this season have been Shay (Doron) and Crystal (Langhorne), and for Green Bay it's been (Tiffany) Mor and (Abby) Scharlow, those players rise to the top in terms of competition. Shay did a tremendous job being aggressive on the offensive end.

On the crowd: Obviously it was a big boost. I'll tell you, what a tremendous environment for women's basketball. To play with that kind of energy and that kind of crowd noise. I can't imagine what it look like and felt like on television. You want to play in atmospheres and environments like that, you want to be able to have fans come out and support the game like they did today.

On the early foul trouble for players: It was really difficult in the first half, and when Crystal (Langhorne) went down with the two quick fouls, and Jade Perry followed, you saw a lot of different lineups. I think the exciting thing is that we've really grown this season and established our depth. Charmaine Carr, Angel Ross and Aurelie Noirez came in and gave us valuable minutes, and that's what we've got to be able to have.

Sophomore Guard Shay Doron
On taking charge in the second half: I think I was getting a lot more aggressive, obviously knocking down shots gives you a lot of energy as well. I definitely was trying to raise the level of envery on the team because we were kind of dead on the defensive end. I knew that that was what it was going to come down to us winning our not, just try to pump people up.

On Crystal Langhorne's early foul trouble: Crystal is an unbelievable player and obviously a huge part of our offense, so it definitely got us out of our rhythm. When Crystal's in there and drags three people on her it's a lot easier for the guards to move around and shoot the ball. Angel Ross, Aurelie Noirez stepped up and Jade Perry played huge for us tonight. That's what you have to have in a team game. Luckily we have the depth in post positions and tonight the depth came through for us.

Senior Guard Anesia Smith
On Coach Frese's halftime speech: She was proud of our effort in the first half. You hold a team to 24 points in the first half and you've done a good job. She keyed in on the positives. She told us to keep focusing and keep playing hard and keep playing defense, and our shots would fall in the second half.

In stopping the three point shot: Our main objective was to defend the three point line, I think we did a great job doing it. If they had to go to trying to score inside the three point line that worked to our advantage. Even though we got beat a couple of times that was our game plan and it worked in our favor. Two is always better than three. That was our motto all week, so that worked for us.
