COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland Terrapin wrestling team will make the trip to Greensboro, N.C., for Saturday's ACC Tournament as part of the 2005 Mat Jam. Several Terps, including 141-pounder Charlie Pinto and 165-pounder Jason Kiessling, are seeking berths in the NCAA Tournament.
The Terps seek to improve upon last year's fifth-place finish and are looking for their first individual ACC champion since 2002 (Brandon York).
Pinto will likely garner a top seed at 141 pounds after posting a 3-1 record within the conference. He is currently on an eight-match winning streak and is 10-2 since the start of January. Pinto's lone conference loss came to North Carolina's Isaiah Britton on January 8.
Kiessling, a runner-up at 157 pounds a year ago earning All-ACC Tournament honors, leads the team in wins with 28. Kiessling should be one of the tournament's top seeds at 165 pounds this season after posting a 4-1 ACC record. He also owns two wins this season over nationally-ranked Chris Stith of Virginia Tech.
Other Terp wrestlers projected to be in the lineup are: Kevin Vinh (125), Sean Carr (133), Jared Villecco (149), Adam James (157), Luke Stauffer (174), Mike Maceroli (184), Jerry Afari (197) and Yony Noy (HWT).
Wrestlers qualify for the NCAA Tournament by winning their weight class at the ACC Tournament or by wild card selection by the conference coaches. The ACC has five wild card selections this season.
