Pinto Takes ACC Title

March 5, 2005

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Charlie Pinto scored an escape and a takedown in the third period to defeat North Carolina's Isaiah Britton 7-4 to win the ACC title at 141 pounds Saturday night in Greensboro, N.C. With the win, the sophomore advances to the NCAA Tournament in St. Louis, Mo., in two weeks.

Pinto, the tournament's No. 2 seed at 141 pounds, advanced to the finals after defeating Duke's Wes Kuser, 8-1. In the finals, Britton struck first with two takedowns in the first period, but Pinto was able to counter with an escape and a reversal. Pinto was able to ride Britton for the entire second period, giving the Tar Heel the 4-3 advantage heading into the third.

Pinto quickly escaped to start the third, and managed a takedown over the top-seeded Britton with just over 30 seconds remaining. He was able to maintain control until time expired, and earned the riding time point to make the final score 7-4.

Pinto will take a 25-9 record and a 10-match winning streak into the NCAA Tournament.

Three other Terps placed at the tournament: Adam James (fourth at 157), Jason Kiessling (fourth at 165) and Jerry Afari (fourth at 197).

Kiessling lost a heartbreaker in the first round, a 5-4 overtime decision to NC State's Ryan Nowicki. Kiessling almost took the win in the one-minute sudden death overtime period, but was unable to get the takedown call. He went on to defeat Virginia Tech's Chris Stith, 3-2, in another overtime thriller before being falling to Duke's Steve Smith in the consolation finals.

After a first round loss to top-seed Kody Hamrah, James rebounded for a 7-2 win over Dan Shvartsman. However, Virginia tech's Reed Carpenter was too much in the consolation finals, winning a 9-0 major decision.

Jerry Afari won his first round match over fourth-seeded Thomas Ovalle, 6-3, but fell in the quarterfinals to top-seed David Dashiell of North Carolina. Afari rebounded in the consolation semifinals with a 8-2 to win over UVa's Scott Smith, but NC State's Zach Garren proved to be too much in the consolation finals registering a fall in 1:47.
