COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland gymnastics turned in a strong performance today despite losing to a tough North Carolina squad, 193.150-192.475. The Terps led after the first rotation, scoring 48.50 on vault, while the Tarheels notched 47.950 on uneven bars.
Maryland's vault effort was much improved after struggling last meet on that event. Rachel Martinez paced Maryland on vault, scoring a 9.825. Angie Ferg added a 9.750 and Marisa St. Louis scored a 9.70.
The Terps moved onto uneven bars, which proved to be a tough event for both teams. Martinez tied Carolina's Olivia Trusty for first overall on uneven bars. Mandy Pascual scored a 9.625 and Rachel Colon added a 9.65. Maryland matched North Carolina's bar score, totaling 47.950.

The Tarheels increased the lead (144.850-144.425) after the third rotation. Maryland turned in another strong performance on floor but it wasn't enough to overtake the Tarheels. Martinez scored a 9.80 and tied for first overall with Carolina's Courtney Bumpers (defending Co-National Champion on floor). Ginny Scott continued her consistency on floor adding a 9.70. The Terps totaled 48.250, nearly tying the Tarheels score of 48.275.
Martinez finished third in the all-around, scoring a 38.575. Courtney Bumpers (39.20) and Christine Robella (38.925) of North Carolina finished first and second.
