Walters among 16 Semifinalists for Tewaaraton Award

April 26, 2005

College Park, Md. - Junior attackman Joe Walters is among 16 players on the 2005 Tewaaraton Trophy semifinal list announced by the Tewaaraton Award Foundation on Monday, April 25. The 16 nominees, who represent 14 schools, will be trimmed to five finalists for the award, which will be presented on June 2.

Walters currently leads the team with 24 goals, 10 assists and 34 points. Earlier this season, he became just the 14th player in the history of Maryland lacrosse to score 100 goals during his career. He is currently tied for ninth on the all-time goal scoring list with 103 goals. He has nine multi-point games to his credit this season and is averaging more than three points per game.

Last year, Walters was a semifinalist for the award as a sophomore, scoring 46 goals and adding 22 assists for 68 points. He was a USILA first team All-American and the ACC Player of the Year.

Junior midfielder Bill McGlone, one of the top midfielders in the country, was on the preseason "Watch List" but was not among the 16 to make the semifinalist list.

The Tewaaraton Trophy is awarded each year to the top male and female varsity lacrosse player, as chosen by the selection committee. The fifth annual award will be given at a banquet on Thursday, June 2. The event will take place in Washington D.C. at the National Geographic Society headquarters.
