NASHVILLE, Tenn. - John Eades fired a 1-under-par 70 to lead the University of Maryland to 24th place in the team standings Thursday after the first round of the NCAA East Regional men's golf tournament being played at the Golf Club of Tennessee.
Eades, a Terrapin junior, was in 27th place in the individual team standings late in the first round, which ended with six teams still on the course due to a rain delay. The first round will be completed early Friday, with the second round of the 54-hole event to follow.
As a team, Maryland shot 304 and was in 24th place after the first 18 holes. The Terps, one of the first squads off the 10th tee on Thursday, were three shots behind Vanderbilt after the opening round.
Starting on the back nine, Eades had three birdies in his first five holes on Thursday. He double-bogeyed the 16th and 18th to make the turn at 1-over-par. He recovered by getting birdies on the second and seventh holes to finish his first round at 70.
Eades has posted Maryland's only subpar rounds in NCAA play over the past six years. The last was his 1-under-par 71 in the final round of the 2003 East Regional at Auburn, when he led the Terrapins at that event as a freshman.
Also for Maryland on Thursday, Hunter Bendall opened with a 36 and finished with a 76th to rank in a tie for 99th at the end of play. Tyler Witman and Tully Coyle each shot 79 for the Terps on the opening day, with Matt Schall finishing with an 82. The Terrapins went to Nashville with a junior and four sophomores in a young lineup.
Wake Forest grabbed the team lead early in the event, scoring a 13-under-par total of 271. North Carolina, one of six teams which failed to finish the first round, was three shots back, with Georgia in the clubhouse in third place at 275.
The top 10 teams and the two top individuals not on qualifying teams will head to the NCAA Division I Nationals to be held at Caves Valley Country Club in Baltimore in early June.
