
Terps Move Up Four Spots at NCAA Golf

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Sophomore Hunter Bendall had three birdies on the back nine en route to a 1-under-par 70 Friday to pace the University of Maryland to a strong day in the second round of the NCAA East Regional men's golf tournament being held at the Golf Club of Tennessee.
Bendall's 70 helped the Terps to a 291 total in the second round, moving Maryland from 24th to a tie for 21st in the team standings. The team score was Maryland's best at an NCAA regional in the past six years, surpassing the 292 posted as a team in the second round in 1999.
Also for Maryland on Friday, sophomore Tully Coyle eagled the par-5 seventh hole en route to an even-par 71, while junior John Eades fired a 73 to post a 1-over total of 143 through 36 holes and a tie for 39th individually.
Bendall was tied for 66th at 146, with Coyle tied for 89th at 150. Tyler Witman improved to a 77 on Friday for the Terps, posting a two-day total of 156, with Matt Schall firing an 83 in the second round for a 165 total.
Eades is in a battle for one of two individual spots that could qualify for a trip to the NCAA Division I Nationals to be held in Baltimore. The top 10 teams and the top two individuals from non-qualifying teams earn a trip to the nationals from the East Regional.
His 143 total over 36 holes was five shots behind the player currently in the second qualifying position. Dustin Johnson of Coastal Carolina was tied for third at 134, while Joel Sjoholm of Georgia State was tied for 13th at 138.
Wake Forest, one of seven Atlantic Coast Conference teams in the East Regional field, held the team lead after two days. The Demon Deacons followed thier opening-round 271 with a 283 on Friday to post a 14-under-par score of 554. Florida was second at 557, with Georgia and Tennessee tied for third at 558.
Georgia Southern was holding onto the 10th and final qualifying spot in the team standings after 36 holes with 569. Georgia State was within a shot of the top 10, with Clemson at 572.
Individually, Rhys Davies of East Tennessee State was 11-under-par after two rounds, following a 66 on Thursday with a 65 on Friday. His 131 total was one shot ahead of Michael Schachner of Duke and three shots ahead of five players tied for third.
The final round of the NCAA East Regional will be played on Saturday.
