McGlone Named First Team All-American By USILA

May 28, 2005

Philadelphia, Pa. - Junior Bill McGlone was named to the USILA All-America first team for the first time in his career as the team's were announced Saturday morning before the NCAA Final Four began at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

A total of six Terps were honored by the USILA, bringing Maryland's three-year total to 22. Junior attackman Joe Walters, a first-team selection in 2004 and an honorable mention honoree in 2003, was named to the second team, while sophomore defender Steve Whittenberg was named to the third team. Maryland also had three honorable mention selections: sophomore goalie Harry Alford, junior midfielder Brendan Healy and sophomore defender Ray Megill.

For McGlone it is his first first-team selection after being a member of the third team in 2004. The native of Swarthmore, Pa., was second on the team with 26 goals and third with 32 points.

Walters leads the Terps with 38 goals on the season and 53 points. Earlier this season he became just the 14th Maryland player to score 100 career goals and is currently tied with Jim Wilkerson (1980-83) for sixth on the all-time goals scored list with 117, just 32 shy of Matt Hahn's school record of 149.

Whittenberg, a transfer from the Air Force Academy, made an immediate impact in his first season with the Terps. The sophomore from Lake Braddock, Va., was fifth on the team with 40 groundballs and lead the squad with 22 caused turnovers.

Alford, a native of Washington, D.C., enjoyed a tremendous first season as the Terrapins' starting goalie, making 191 saves on the season, which ranks 10th on the single-season record chart. He had 11 games with double-digit saves and was named MVP of the ACC Tournament.

Healy was one of only four players to start every game for the Terps and set career highs for goals in a season with 20 and points with 28, which matched his career total coming into the 2005 season.

Megill, who began the season sidelined with an injured ankle, joined the starting line-up for the Terps following the loss to Dartmouth and made an impact with his athleticism and toughness. The all-ACC Tournament team selection was second on the team with 19 caused turnovers and eighth with 26 groundballs.
