College Park, Md. - Current Maryland men's lacrosse players Joe Walters and Bill McGlone are among 120 players that have been invited to try out for the 2006 U.S. Men's Lacrosse Team, US Lacrosse announced on Wednesday.
In addition to Walters and McGlone, five former Terps were also invited to participate in the tryouts: Ryan Moran (midfield), Michael Howely (defense), Chris Passavia (defense), Lee Zink (defense) and Brian Dougherty (goaltender).
"This is a tremendous honor and opportunity for these players," said Maryland men's lacrosse head coach Dave Cottle. "This is a chance to compete at the highest level and represent the United States in an international event."
Walters, a two-time semifinalist for the Tewaraaton Trophy, leads the Terps in points (39) and goals (27), while McGlone is second on the squad with 25 points and 20 goals. Both players earned All-ACC honors this season.
A total of 30 attackmen, 42 midfielders, 36 defensemen and 12 goalies were invited to participate by the 2006 U.S. Team Men's Player Selection Committee, chaired by three-time U.S. team player Larry Quinn. The players were selected from a field of approximately 200 applicants.
The tryouts will be held from June 13-16 at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County, and 23 players will be selected from those tryouts to represent the United States at the International Lacrosse Federation World Championships in July 2006 in London, Ontario.
