College Park, Md. -
The University of Maryland men's lacrosse team has been selected as the No. 3 seed in the 2005 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship tournament. The Terps will host Penn State in the first round at Byrd Stadium, Saturday night at 7:30 p.m..
"This is what we work for all year," said Maryland head coach Dave Cottle. "Every men's lacrosse team in the country starts the season with the goal of making it to the NCAA tournament. I'm proud that we're one of the 16 team remaining and look forward to some outstanding games against some fantastic lacrosse programs."
The Terps, the 2005 ACCC tournament champions, were awarded one of 10 at-large bids to the tournament. In addition to its ACC title and 9-5 record, Maryland is tops in the NCAA in strength of schedule and is second in the RPI.
Penn State makes the tournament as an at-large selection after finishing the season by winning seven straight games, including upsetting No. 7 Georgetown Sunday afternoon. The Nittany Lions finished the regular season with a 8-5 record and were ranked 16th in the latest Geico/STX Coaches' Poll. They also are 16th in strength of schedule and 16th in the RPI (both before PSU's 13-12 overtime win over the Hoyas).
