USA Basketball Diaries: Marissa Coleman & Crystal Langhorne
The USA U19 World Championship Team, including Terrapins Crystal Langhorne and Marissa Coleman, turns its attention to the 2005 FIBA U19 World Championship which begins Friday, July 15 and runs through July 24 in Tunis, Tunisia.
The USA has gone 5-1 heading into the tournament, picking up a gold medal at the Sports International Invitational in San Diego, then splitting exhibition games against Hungary in Budapest last week.
Langhorne (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro) has been leading the USA on its tour. After leading the team in scoring at the Sports International Invitational with 13.5 points per game and an incredible .880 field goal percentage, she was the team's top scorer in both games vs. Hungary. In the USA's 82-42 thumping on July 9, she scored a team-high tying 13 points in 14 minutes, while grabbing seven boards. In the squad's 75-67 setback the following day, she netted a team-best 18 points, going just 4-for-5 from the field, but was also 10-for-11 from the free throw line, and added seven rebounds.
Entering college this fall, Coleman posted seven rebounds in both games, tying for the team high in the Americans' loss. In that game, she was also one of three players in double figures, tallying 12 points. A McDonald's, WBCA and Parade High School All-American in 2005, Coleman is in her second stint with the U.S. World Championship team.
The United States is one of 12 teams in the 2005 FIBA U19 World Championship vying for a gold medal. Also participating are Australia, Canada, Democratic Republic of Congo, Russia, China, Spain, Puerto Rico, Serbia & Montenegro, Korea, Hungary and host Tunisia. Teams will participate in five round-robin games within its group, followed by the quarterfinals, semifinals and championship rounds.
