Powley Selected to U.S. Field Hockey Junior World Cup Team

July 26, 2005

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland's rising senior Lauren Powley was one of 18 players selected to the U.S. Field Hockey Junior World Cup team, which was announced yesterday by U.S. Field Hockey. The tournament is set to take place in Santiago, Chile, Sept. 14-25. A junior this fall, Kristina Edmonds was named an alternate.

A three-time NFHCA All-American, including earning first team honors twice, Powley (Mountaintop, Pa.) helped the United States qualify for the tournament in March when the U.S. placed 2nd at the Junior Pan American Championship in Puerto Rico.

In April, Powley was called up to play with the Senior National Team where she traveled to New Zealand for a test series, then played in a three-game series vs. Australia. She also recently participated in the Rabobank Champions Challenge in Virginia Beach, Va., where she started all six games of the international tournament. Powley, who has been named to the All-ACC team twice, will miss a portion of the season.

A defender Edmonds (Emmaus, Pa.) is entering her junior year at Maryland. She helped the U.S. Under-21 team win the U.S. Field Hockey Elite Performance National Championship earlier this month in Virginia Beach, Va.
