COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland women's basketball head coach Brenda Frese has announced that Christie Marrone, a 5-foot-6 guard from Brooklyn, N.Y., will join the Terrapin squad this fall after transferring from Virginia Tech.
"We are ecstatic and welcome Christie Marrone to the Maryland women's basketball family," said Frese. "She brings a wealth of experience having played one season at the highest level. Christie is a tremendous three-point shooter who will add another offensive weapon to our team."
According to the University of Maryland Athletics Compliance Office, the ACC waived the two-year intraconference transfer rule and Marrone will sit out just one season because of NCAA Division I transfer rules. Marrone will be able to participate in practices this season. She will have three years of eligibility remaining.
Marrone played in 29 games for the Hokies, who reached the first round of the NCAA Tournament, averaging 4.3 points and 1.5 assists per game. She scored a season-high 12 points vs. NC State and had a season-high seven assists at Duke.
Marrone attended St. John Villa Academy where she scored over 1,800 points, including 202 three pointers, during her high school career. She led St. John Villa to the Class B and C New York State Federation title in her junior and freshman year, respectively, earning Class B Player of the Year honors her junior season by the New York Sportswriters Association. A McDonald's All-American finalist, she was also a member of the USA East team which won the USA Basketball Youth Festival in 2003.
The Terrapin women's basketball team returns four starters from last season's 22-10 squad which reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the second-consecutive year. The Terps also welcome the No. 4-ranked recruiting class in the nation this fall.
