Freshman Tyler McCandless finished eighth overall in his collegiate debut as the men's cross country team came in fourth at the Great Meadows Invitational Saturday.

With a total score of 102 Maryland finished behind Georgetown, American and Yale and ahead of Millersville and Howard at the Virginia meet. McCandless, an Allentown, Pa. native, finished the 4.1-mile course in a time of 21:10.00.

"Tyler was fantastic," said coach Dr. Michael Garrison. "He was a very aggresive runner."

Freshman Jake Travers came in 17th for Maryland in 21:43.00. Josh Davis, Richie Booth and Jake Travers finished in 23rd, 31st and 32nd, respectively, in their first collegiate races.

"The freshmen were very excited and very proud to put on that Maryland uniform for the first time today," Garrison said.

Also for the Terps junior Pat Bailey finished 36th.
