COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The fifth-ranked Santa Clara Broncos used three first half goals - including a pair of goals from Keith Devey - to defeat the Georgetown Hoyas 4-0 in the third game of the Maryland/adidas Classic.
The Broncos (3-1-0) controlled the flow of play in the first half putting constant pressure on the Georgetown defense. Erik Ustruck got Santa Clara on the board first in the 29th minute on a give-and-go with Hector Guzman. Ustruck played to Guzman with his back to the goal who quickly distributed it back to Ustruck who buried the shot from just outside the box.
Just 43 seconds later, the Broncos struck again on a high cross from Mehdi Ballouchy that found the head of Devey for the 2-0 lead. Devey then gave Santa Clara the 3-0 lead as time was expiring in the first half on a 35-yard blast that curled into the net over the head of Georgetown keeper Andrew Keszler.
Santa Clara kept the pressure on in the second half, and Guzman notched his second assist on the afternoon after distributing the ball to Matt Hatzke down the left side of the box for the score in the 52nd minute. The Hoyas (3-1-0) were able to get chances in the second half, but Bronco keepers Christopher Moreo stopped three shots and Kevin Sweeney made another save to help preserve the shutout victory.
