Scouting the Nittany Lions
The Nittany Lions are 6-0-0 on the season and were ranked fourth in last week's NSCAA coaches' poll. Four of Penn State's six victories have come over ranked opponents, including a 5-2 win over No. 4 Virginia on Sept.4 and a 1-0 win in double-overtime at No. 3 UCLA last Friday.
Penn State is led by MAC Hermann Trophy candidate Tiffany Weimer, who is among the NCAA leaders in points (22) and goals (10). The senior All-American has at least one goal in all six games this season and has three multi-goal games. Junior midfielder Ali Krieger, along with Weimer, gives PSU a dynamic 1-2 offensive punch. Krieger is second on the team with nine points and four goals.
The Nittany Lions are coming off a remarkable 2004 season that saw them compile an 19-3-1 record, including a perfect 10-0 record in the Big Ten. Penn State returns 19 letterwinners (eight starters) from that squad that advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Head Coach Paula Wilkins is in her fifth season at the helm of the Nittany Lion program and has a record of 84-14-6 (.837).
Scouting the Bulldogs
The Yale Bulldgos are 3-2-0 on the season, including winning two of three on the road this season. Maryland will be the third ACC opponent for Yale in 2005. The Bulldogs are 0-2 vs. the ACC, having lost to No. 12 Duke 1-0 (Aug. 26) and No. 2 North Carolina 1-0 (Aug. 28).
Yale is led by freshman midfielder Crysti Howser (2 goals), who is the only Bulldog to score more than one goal so far this season. Fellow freshman Emma Whitfield is second on the team with three points on a goal and an assist. The Bulldogs play two goalkeepers, Chole Beizer and Starr Susan, who have each allowed only one goal on the season.
Yale is coming off a successful 2004 season that saw them compile an 13-5-0 record, including 5-2 record (2nd place) in Ivy League play. The Bulldogs return 14 letterwinners (eight starters) from that squad that earned an NCAA Tournament bid.
Head Coach Rudy Meredith is in his 10th season at the helm of the Bulldog program and has a record of 107-67-11 (.603).
This will be the first-ever meeting between Maryland and Yale.
The UM-PSU Series
The Nittany Lions hold a slim 6-4 edge in the all-time series with the Terrapins and have won the last four of the last five in the series. But that one Terp victory came in the second round of last year's NCAA tournament that saw Maryland defeat Penn State, the No. 2 seed, and end its 39-game winning streak at Jeffrey Field.
The Terps and Penn State have played in College Park on four occasions, with each team winning twice. In the last meeting at Ludwig Field, the Nittany Lions defeated Maryland 3-0.
The Last Time vs. Penn State
State College, Pa. - The University of Maryland women's soccer team pull off arguably the biggest win in program history on Nov. 14, 2004, beating No. 2-seed Penn State 1-0 at Jeffrey Field in State College.
Junior Mallory Mahar, a first team All-ACC selection, scored the game's lone goal in the 33rd minute off a header that trickled into the right lower 90 of the Penn State goal. Junior Danielle Malagari, who started the play on a free kick following a Nittany Lion foul, forwarded the ball to junior Kimmy Francis in the far right corner of the Penn State defensive zone. Francis crossed the ball to about the six yard line where Mahar dove to get a piece of the ball, redirecting it for the goal.
With the one goal lead the Terps turned up the defensive intensity challenging every Penn State possession. Sophomore goalkeeper Nikki Resnick stopped nine shots for Maryland on the afternoon, including two amazing stops in one-on-one situations with Penn State's All-American forward Tiffany Weimer.
The Nittany Lions had their best chance of the second half in the 67th minute when PSU defender Denay Riley gathers a losse ball inside the Terrapin 18-yard box and fired a shot into an open Terrapin net, but Malagari recovered to deflect the ball, which then hit off the far right post before being cleared out of the Maryland zone.
The Last Time vs. Penn State At Ludwig Field
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Revenge was on the minds of the Maryland's women's soccer team entering their home opener against No. 13 Penn State Sunday at Ludwig Field.
Nearly 10 months ago, those same Nittany Lions eliminated the Terps from the 2003 NCAA Tournament with a 2-1 victory in College Park. But an early goal by sophomore striker Tiffany Weimer deflated the Terps and the Lion defense, from keeper Amanda Brown, staved off several good second-half scoring opportunities en route to a 3-0 victory in front of 1,032. The 24th-ranked Terps fall to 2-2, Penn State moves to 3-1.
"I thought Penn State's defense and their goalkeeper played very well," said head coach Shannon Higgins-Cirovski. "But I was pleased with our play and the amount of possession time we had. I feel we really battled this team very hard for much of the game. We had some chances late in the game but couldn't finish them off."
With Penn State up 1-0 for most of the match, Maryland mounted a charge with about eight minutes left in regulation as Katie Ludwig fired a point-blank shot that was stopped by Brown which began a flurry. About a minute later Jen Biscoe blasted a shot that went high to the right over the PSU net. Then freshman Ashly Kennedy had one great chance again point blank with Brown, who came up huge again with a stop.
Following the Terps' opportunities, Penn State capitalized as Heidi Drummond scored a breakaway as Maryland goalkeeper Kristen Barnhill came out the net and Drummond moved by her scoring into an empty goal with 2:38 left in the game.
Then with just six second left Stephanie Smith converted a shot off the crossbar that bounced in off a scramble from the right corner flag with time counting down.
Brown finished with three saves, all of them in the second half. Barnhill also had three stops.
At Ludwig Field
Since its opening in 1995, Ludwig Field has proved to be a tremendous home-field advantage for the Terps women's soccer team. All-time Maryland is 88-26-8 (.754) at Ludwig Field.
This season the Terps are 2-1-1 at Ludwig Field. Maryland battled Towson to a scoreless tie in the season opener and defeated Rhode Island 4-0 on Aug. 28. The four goals vs. the Rams is the highest scoring output for Maryland at Ludwig Field since beating Wake Forest 5-1 on Oct. 25, 2003. The Terps hosted the Maryland/adidas Classic, finishing third with a 1-1 record following a 2-0 loss to Villanova on Sept. 8 before beating Rutgers 1-0 on Sept. 11.

Playing The Best
Once again, the Terps boast one of the nation's most competitive schedules. The Terps take on eight teams in the preseason NSCAA poll including three of the top five and six of the top 10. The Terps host No. 1 North Carolina (Oct. 2), host No. 2 Penn State (Sept. 16), at No. 5 Notre Dame (0-6 L), at No. 7 Duke (Oct. 16), host No. 9 Boston College (Oct. 29), host No. 10 Wake Forest (Sept. 30), at No. 12 Virginia (Oct. 23), at No. 16 Florida State (Oct. 6), and vs. No. 18 UConn at the Notre Dame Invitational (1-2 L, 2OT). Two other Maryland opponents also received votes: Clemson (Sept. 22) and Yale (Sept. 18).
During five of the past six seasons, Maryland has at least one upset win or tie of a top-10 ranked team: a 4-3 win at No. 9 Duke on Sept. 19, 1999 and a 2-1 victory over Clemson on Oct. 17, 1999; a 3-1 win over No. 4 Penn State on Aug. 29, 2000; a 1-0 overtime over No. 8 Clemson on Oct. 13, 2001 and a 1-1 tie at No. 2 North Carolina last season, on Nov. 1, 2002. Most recently, the Terps stunned No. 3 UCLA 2-1 at the Virginia Soccer Classic on Sept. 12, 2004. A month and a half later, Maryland beat No. 10 Duke 1-0 in overtime at Ludwig Field. The Terps topped all of those victories with a 1-0 shutout of No. 2 seed Penn State in the 2004 NCAA Tournament. The win also snapped the Nittany Lions 39-game home winning streak and was head coach Paula Wilkins' first-ever loss at Jeffrey Field.
