Maryland has won its annual tournament in each of the past three seasons. The last team to win the tournament other than Maryland was Virginia in 2001. The Terps have a seven-game winning streak in the tournament.

The Terps and Broncos have not met on the pitch since 1998, but the two teams got a glance at each other last week as Santa Clara defeated UCLA at Cal State Fullerton last Friday before Maryland defeated the Titans on the same field later that evening.

The Terps will remain at home for the next two games taking on Clemson on Friday, Sept. 16 at 8 p.m. in the ACC opener before playing St. Bonaventure on Sunday, Sept. 18, at 5 p.m.

    Terps Jump Start Relief Effort
Under the leadership of head coach Sasho Cirovski and Louisiana native Jason Garey, the men's soccer team is jump starting a fundraising effort to help the victims of Hurrican Katrina. A $500 contribution from Cirovski combined with $20 from each member of the men's soccer team creates a minimum $1,000 donation, and further contributions will be accepted at this Friday night's game against Santa Clara. Members of the women's soccer team will be accepting donations in three locations to contribute to the effort.

    The Week That Was
    • The Terps enter this weekend with a 1-1 record after defeating Cal State Fullerton 7-0 but falling to fourth-ranked UCLA, 4-0.
    • Maryland's Stephen King scored a career-high four goals in the win over the Titans and eight different players registered a point in the victory. Goalies Craig Salvati and Chris Seitz combined for the shutout. The Terps got production from their freshmen as Graham Zusi scored a pair of goals and Matt Beckman contributed an assist.
    • The seven-goal deficit was the largest in Cal State Fullerton's 30-year history.
    • Against UCLA, Maryland could not keep its offensive momentum as the Bruins claimed a 4-0 victory. The Terps managed just seven shots on the game, none of which were on goal. The four-goal deficit was the largest for Maryland since North Carolina defeated the Terps 5-1 in 2001.
    • Defender Kevin Tangney started both games over the weekend, the only freshman to do so.

    Tough Slate
    • According to the most recent SoccerTimes.com poll, nine Maryland Terrapin opponents are ranked among the nation's top 25, including both opponents this week (Santa Clara is fifth, Virginia Commonwealth is 15th). Also, five Maryland opponents are currently ranked in the Top 10.
    • The Terps are also facing 10 teams that advanced to the 2004 NCAA Tournament, including fellow College Cup qualifiers Indiana and Duke.
    • Maryland is 0-1 against ranked opponents this season (a 4-0 loss to No. 5 UCLA).

    Goalin Garey
    • After one of the strongest offensive seasons in Maryland history, forward Jason Garey has garnered national attention heading into his senior season. The Sports Illustrated On Campus Player of the Year set a school record for points in 2004 with 53. He netted 22 goals and had nine assists.
    • Garey has been named a preseason All-American by CollegeSoccerNews.com and Soccer America. He was also among the 25 players named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List that was released August 24. Garey was a semifinalist for the award in 2004.
    • Garey has three points this season on one goal and an assist.

    King For A Day
    • Sophomore Stephen King scored four goals on four shots to lead Maryland to a 7-0 rout of Cal State Fullerton in the season opener on Sept. 2. King, who scored seven goals in over 2,000 minutes as a freshman, needed just nine minutes to score the hat trick and recorded his fourth goal in the 55th minute.
    • The Medford, N.J. native started every game for Maryland as a freshman and was a member of the All-ACC Freshman team.

    Plenty Of Help
    • All seven of Maryland goals this season have been assisted. Seven different players have assists this season, and A.J. Godbolt and Marc Burch have two on the year.

Series History vs. Santa Clara and VCU
    • The series between Maryland and Santa Clara is tied at 1-1, with the Broncos winning the last meeting 1-0 back in 1998 in Santa Clara. The only other meeting between the two teams was in 1997, where the Terps defeated the Broncos 3-2 in College Park.
    • Maryland leads the all-time series against Virginia Commonwealth, 5-1. The Terps defeated the Rams, 2-1, in last season's meeting. Jason Garey scored a goal and had an assist and Domenic Mediate scored the game-winner. The Terps played the last 15 minutes down a man after a red card, and VCU's Dominic Oduro capitalized with a score in the 82nd minute but were unable to get the equalizer.

    Home Sweet Home
    • The Terps have had remarkable success at Ludwig Field posting a 37-3-1 (.921) record over the past three seasons, including a perfect 13-0 mark in 2002.
    • That record also includes an 8-0-1 mark during the NCA A Tournament which has helped Maryland reach three straight College Cups. (The Terps advanced on penalty kicks, 5-4, after tying Creighton in the third round of the NCAA Tournament.)
    • Maryland won 23 straight games at home between 2002-03, the fourth-longest streak in NCAA history.
    • For the first time since the Terps started playing at Ludwig Field in 1995, Maryland averaged over 2,000 fans per game during the 2004 season.

    Santa Clara At A Glance
    • Santa Clara comes to College Park with a 2-0-0 record, including a big win against UCLA in the season-opener.
    • Keith DeVey scored dramatic game-winners in both games, notching the deciding goals in the final five minutes of each. Against the Bruins, DeVey scored on an impossible angle on the right side of the box to seal the upset. Against the Titans, he finished a rebound to earn the victory. He was named to the CollegeSoccerNews.com Team of the Week.
    • DeVey and Peter Lowry each have two goals on the season. Kelechi Igwe is the only other Bronco to tally a point this season, assisting on the game-winner against Fullerton.
    • Christopher Moreo has started and played every minute for the Broncos in goal. He surrendered two goals against the Bruins but shut out the Titans.
    • Junior midfielder Mehdi Ballouchy is on the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List.
    • Santa Clara and Maryland were each in the NCAA Semifinals in 2003 in Columbus, Ohio. The Broncos fell to eventual champs Indiana while the Terps dropped a 1-0 decision to St. John's that season.
    • Cameron Rast is in his fourth season at Santa Clara. He has a career record of 43-16-5.

    Virginia Commonwealth At A Glance
    • The Rams come to College Park with a 1-1-0 record after falling 1-0 to North Carolina but picking up a 3-1 win over Monmouth.
    • Veit Schaidinger scored two goals against Monmouth, but it was Pat Viray who notched the game-winner against the Hawks.
    • The Rams went with a different goalkeeper in each of their two games. Rob Szymanik made three saves in a losing effort against the Tar Heels while Andrew Dykstra stopped two shots in the win over Monmouth.
    • Dominic Oduro was named to several preseason All-America teams this season and is on the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List. The Ghana native scored 16 goals in 2004, which ranks fourth all-time in VCU history for a single season.
    • Senior Stephen Shirley tied a school record with 10 assists in 2003, and he is 11th all-time for career assists with 13.
    • The Rams are coached by Tim O'Sullivan, who ranks 25th all-time on the Division I list for wins among active coaches and is 50th overall.

    Cirovski Five Shy of 200
    • Terrapin head coach Sasho Cirovski is just five wins shy of his 200th career victory. His career mark is 195-97-18.
    • Cirovski, who had a pair of 13-win seasons at Hartford before coming to College Park, has 169 wins at Maryland (which ranks second only to the legendary Doyle Royal at Maryland).
    • Cirovski's .659 career winning percentage ranks 20th among active coaches.
