
No. 21 Navy Tops Maryland Wrestlers, 33-9

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy won seven of 10 bouts as the 21st-ranked Midshipmen defeated Maryland, 33-9, Wednesday night in Annapolis, Md. Brendan Byrne, Alex Krom and Adam DeCosmo picked up wins for the Terps. Maryland will return to action Friday night at 7:30 in Comcast Pavilion against NC State.
The dual started at 157 pounds where the Middies picked up a major decision to take the early lead. DeCosmo countered with a 9-4 win over Craig Dziewiatkowski. DeCosmo used a strong first period in which he scored a pair of takedowns to set the tone in the match. Leading 4-2 heading into the third period, DeCosmo scored four points in the decisive third period and racked up 1:09 of riding time to earn the decision.
In the next bout, Navy's Matt Stolpinski slipped past Dominic Buckman, 3-2. Navy then pulled away in the next four bouts recording a major decision, a technical fall and two pins to take command of the dual, 28-3.
Byrne got the Terps back in the win column with a 9-4 decision over Sean Knapp at 133 pounds. Byrne scored three takedowns -- including two in the first period -- and a reversal in the win. Krom also picked up a win in the dual, defeating Spencer Manley, 8-2. Krom controlled the match allowing no offensive points and amassing nearly three minutes of riding time in the dual.
With the loss, Maryland moves to 1-7 on the year. Navy improved to 8-1.
