CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - The escape was a relief. The response was definitive.

Sixth-ranked Maryland survived two shots at victory for Virginia at the end of regulation Friday night, then scored the first 10 points in overtime in an 84-74 victory.

"Just a heck of a game," Terrapins coach Brenda Frese said. "I'm proud of the fact that we hung in there. We showed a lot of poise in the last five minutes (of regulation). It was a wild finish. We know how difficult it is to win here."

Maryland's Marissa Coleman scored five of her 22 points in overtime and Crystal Langhorne had four in the extra session.

Coleman was 6-for-9 from the field, including 3-for-3 on 3-pointers, and had eight rebounds, three assists and two steals. Langhorne, who scored 17, shot 7-for-9.

The Terrapins (16-2, 3-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) also got 15 points from Ashleigh Newman while Kristi Toliver, a two-time Group AA AP state player of the year from Harrisonburg, had 12 points and 10 assists.

Virginia (12-4, 1-3), coming off an impressive 78-59 victory at No. 18 Virginia Tech, didn't score for the first 3:12 of the 5-minute overtime. When Takisha Granberry broke the drought with the first of two free throws, it was too little too late.

"As much as you'd like to think this was a moral victory, this doesn't go in the win column," said Sharnee Zoll, who led Virginia with 17 points and eight assists.

"We let it get away."

Siedah Williams added 16 points and Lyndra Littles 13 for Virginia, which shot 53 percent in the second half, but was just 1-for-8 in overtime.

Maryland shot 53.7 percent from the field, including 9-of-16 from 3-point range. Virginia made four of 10 3-pointers and shot 44.8 percent overall.
