PHILADELPHIA -
Maryland forward Jason Garey was selected as the third overall pick in the MLS SuperDraft on Friday at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia. Marc Burch was taken in the second round by LA Galaxy, Michael Dello-Russo was taken in the fourth round by FC Dallas and Kenney Bertz was taken with the 47th pick by DC United.
The four players from Maryland matched Indiana for the most taken in the SuperDraft.
Garey's selection marks the second straight year that the Columbus Crew have taken a Terrapin player (Domenic Mediate was the 23rd pick in the draft last season).
He is the highest Maryland player to be drafted since Taylor Twellman was taken with the second overall pick in 2002.
Garey set Maryland career records with 60 goals and 140 points. He led the Terps to the 2005 NCAA title and became the first player from the University of Maryland to win the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy.
With the 24th pick (the final pick of the second round), the defending MLS champions LA Galaxy selected Terp forward/midfielder Marc Burch. Burch was instrumental in Maryland's NCAA title run scoring two game-winning goals in the NCAA Tournament.
With the 42nd pick (fourth round), Michael Dello-Russo was taken by FC Dallas. He was an anchor on the defensive line for the Terps and was selected to the All-College Cup team in December. Dello-Russo joins former Terps Clarence Goodson and Abe Thompson with FC Dallas.
All-ACC defender Kenney Bertz was taken with the 47th pick by DC United. Bertz was Maryland's most imposing defender and he made over 80 starts in his career with the Terps.
Nine players over the last three years have been selected in the MLS SuperDraft.
