Women Have Strong Day at Terp Indoor Meet

LANDOVER, Md. - University of Maryland athletes finished 1-2-3 in the women's shot put and 1-2 in both the women's weight throw and the women's long jump to highlight all home-team performances Saturday in the Terrapin Invitational indoor track and field meet at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex.

Bria Johnson placed first for the Terps with a throw of 45-2.5. Aysha Gregory (45-1.00) and Zakiya Shivers (42-1.50) followed Johnson to finish second and third. Jillian Anwah placed ninth in the event posting a mark of 39-4.00.

Jillian Anwah and Zakiya Shivers both threw for season-best marks in the women's 20-pound weight throw, with Anwah posting a throw of 58-5.75 and Shivers throwing 58-4. Aysha Gregory placed 11th in the event for the Terps with a throw of 43-10.

In the long jump, Foster's first-place mark of 20-2.50 and Hernandez' second-place jump of 20-0.25, convincingly beat the rest of the competition, with the third-place finishers coming in at 18-6.50.

On the men's side, sophomore James Rolle led the Terps with his second-place finish in the shot put. Rolle's mark of 48-7.25 beat his previous season-best by 2 feet, 2 inches. Salvador Delhierro also finished in the top-10, with a mark of 45-2.50 that was good for ninth place. The freshman also placed third in the weight throw with a mark of 51-6.25.

Dominic Berger placed fourth in the 60 meters and was the second-best collegiate runner in the event, with a time of 6.96. Richard Taylor ran a 7.00 in the preliminaries of the 60 meters, which was his collegiate track debut. Taylor, who is also a cornerback for the football team, finished 10th.

In the women's mile, Laurel Jefferson led a 2-3-4 finish for the Terps with an ECAC-qualifying mark of 4:59.14. Meghan Braffet finished third in 5:04.41 and Katie Purcell finished fourth with a time of 5:09.93. Keira Carlstrom from American finished first in the event, running a 4:53.40.

Freshman Anthony Walker ran a 50.20 in his first collegiate 400-meter competition and placed fourth. His time was the Terps' third-best of the season.

Cori Koch and Allison Carney competed in the 3,000 meters for the first time this season and finished second and third respectively. Koch ran a 10:19.62, while Carney finished in 10:25.42.

Danielle Siebert placed second in the 800 meters, running a 2:16.94 and Laurel Jefferson placed sixth with a time of 2:20.28. Kelly Wallace ran a season-best time of 2:21.51, which was good for an eighth-place finish.

Tyler McCandless ran a season-best time of 8:42.36 in the 3,000 meters. His mark was good for fourth place, and was second-best among collegiate runners. Matt Sanders rounded out the top 10, finishing in 8:51.39.

Kaitlyn Fitzgerald posted a second-place pole vault of 11-3.75, which is her best of the season. In the women's 4 x 400 relay, University of Maryland teams placed third (3:53.45) and 10th. The Terrapin men's 4 x 400 team placed fifth with a season-best time of 3:20.71.

Joel Brown (Nike) won both the men's 60 meters and the 60-meter hurdles. He ran a 6.78 in the dash and a 7.72 in the hurdles.

Kellie Wells from Hampton was also a double-winner, placing first in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.27 and the 200 meters with a time of 24.73.

MARYLAND NOTES

  • Josh Davis posted the Terps' best time of the year in the men's mile finishing sixth with a time of 4:21.11.
  • Christina Smith cut 0.15 off her previous season-best in the women's 60-meter hurdles, running a 9.07 in the preliminaries. Kierra Foster finished fourth and Chanel Williams was sixth in the final.
  • Lynn Hernandez placed fourth in the women's 60 meters with an ECAC-qualifying time of 7.59.
  • Natasha Emmanuel placed 12th in her 400-meter season debut, running a 59.57.
  • Jasmine Artis had a season-best high jump of 5-4.25 and tied for seventh place. In the same event, Toni Aluko placed third with a jump of 5-6 and Libby Babcock jumped 5-2.25 to tie for ninth in her first high jump competition of the season.
  • Kyle Rauser placed seventh in the men's 800 meters, running a 1:57.14.
  • Renee Clarke posted the Terps' best time of the season in the 200 meters, running a 25.52 and tying for sixth. In the same event, Amanda Radziminski cut 0.21 off her previous season-best, posting a time of 27.16.
  • Freshman Chris Haley placed 13th with a jump of 21-10 in his collegiate debut in the men's long jump. Jayson Alexander jumped 21-8.25 and placed 14th. Toyosi Ogunkua placed 21st with a jump of 20-10 and Devin Regan placed 28th with a jump of 20-3.75. Both athletes were also competing in the long jump for the first time.
  • In the Terps' first triple jump mark of the year, Toyosi Ogunkua posted a mark of 41-5.25 and placed 12th.
  • David Edwards-Brennan placed third in the men's high jump with a mark of 6-6. In the same event, Chris Haley placed ninth with a jump of 6-2.
  • Toni Aluko had a 36-9.75 triple jump and finished fifth in the event. Jasmine Artis placed 10th with a jump of 35-10.50. The marks were the Terps' first of the season.
