COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland's Kristi Toliver was named the Atlantic Coast Conference's Rookie of the Week, which was announced today. She earns the honor for the first time this season after averaging 14.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game off the bench in helping the No. 6 Terps to two conference victories last week.
Toliver had a career game in Maryland's 75-57 win over Florida State last Monday, scoring a team-high 16 points to go with a career-best six rebounds. A guard from Harrisonburg, Va., she was 6-for-8 from the field, including a flawless 4-for-4 from beyond the 3-point arc. The four 3s were also a career high. Against Virginia on Friday, Toliver picked up her second-career double-double, tallying 12 points and 10 assists, just one shy of her career best. Playing in her home state for the first time in a Terrapin uniform, she helped the Terps top Virginia, 84-74, in overtime, giving the team its first win in University Hall since 1992 and only the fifth in the history of the series. Toliver had several crucial assists late in the game, including helpers on the first three Maryland buckets in overtime. Toliver was also 4-for-4 from the charity stripe and blocked a career-high two shots.
For the week, Toliver went 9-for-16 from the floor (56.3 percent), including a 6-for-8 performance (75.0 percent) from three-point range. She boasts a 71.4 three-point shooting percentage in conference games which is tops in the ACC.
Toliver is the second Maryland freshman this season to earn Rookie of the Week honors. Classmate Marissa Coleman (Cheltenham, Md./St. John's College [D.C.]) earned the honor three times.
The Terps are 16-2 on the season and improved to 3-1 in conference play after its two victories last week. Maryland takes on Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va., tonight. The game will be televised on the ACC's Regional Sports Network (Comcast SportsNet, Fox Sports South, Sun Sports). The game can be heard on the Terrapin Radio Sports Network.
