The Maryland Gymnastics squad defeated North Carolina and James Madison on Sunday. The Terps scored a season-high team total of 191.975, finishing in second behind no. 16 Kentucky (193.450).The Tar Heels finished in third place with a score of 191.725 and the Dukes finished fourth with a score of 183.35.
Maryland scored a team total of 48.025 on vault for third-place overall. North Carolina dominated the event with a score of 48.925. Angie Ferg led all terps on this event with a score of 9.75 and a fifth-place finish. Rachel Martinez finished ninth with a score of 9.625 and Rachel Colon added a 9.6 for eleventh place. North Carolina's Courtney Bumpers won the event with a score of 9.875.
The Terps tallied a season-high team total of 48.425 on uneven bars for first overall. Martinez and Alex Gatch notched 9.75 to tie for sixth place. Mandy Pascual scored a 9.7 for ninth place and Colon added a 9.675 for tenth place. Krystle Cook of Kentucky took first place with a score of 9.85.
Maryland finished second on balance beam with a season-high team total of 47.7. Gatch finished tied for eighth place with a score of 9.65 and Ferg and Martinez tied for tenth place with a score of 9.625. Kristen O'Sheilds of Kentucky finished first with a 9.825 to help the Wildcats win the event (48.85).
The Terps notched a season-high 47.825 on floor exercise and finished third overall. Martinez tallied a 9.775 for fourth place and Colon scored a 9.625 for ninth place. Ferg added a 9.6 and tied for tenth overall. North Carolina's Mikel Hester and Christine Robella tied for first place with a scored of 9.825 but Kentucky took first overall on the event (48.25).
Martinez finished third in the all-around with a score of 38.775 and Colon finished sixth with a score of 37.9. North Carolina's Christine Robella took first place with a score of 39.15.
Maryland will return home to host the Governor's Cup Saturday, February 4 at 7 p.m. The Terps will team with the Towson Tigers to take on North Carolina and North Carolina State in the annual battle of Maryland vs. North Carolina.
