COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Sixth-ranked Maryland hosts Miami for an ACC clash on Wednesday night, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. It is the first meeting between the teams in College Park since 1993. The game will be broadcast live on the Terrapin Radio Sports Network, with Matt Noble and David Preston calling the action.
Wednesday night's game features five of the ACC's top scorers, with Miami's Tamara James pacing the conference, averaging 20.8 points per game. Maryland sophomore Crystal Langhorne (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro), the reigning ACC Player of the Week, is third in the league, averaging 16.9 ppg.
The Terps will also have to contend with the scoring prowess of the Hurricane's Renee Taylor, who is ranked fifth in the ACC with 15.6 points per game. However, Terrapins Marissa Coleman (Cheltenham, Md./St. Johns College [D.C.]), ACC Co-Rookie of the Week this week, and junior Shay Doron (Great Neck, N.Y./Christ the King) are also among the league's top 10 scorers, ranking seventh (15.1 ppg) and ninth (14.6 ppg), respectively.
Maryland (19-2, 6-1 ACC) has won the last two meetings and leads the series 4-1. After falling to Miami in 2002, head coach Brenda Frese's first season, 97-66, the next two meetings were won by the Terps by a combined six points. In 2004, the Terrapins topped the Canes, 86-85, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Baton Rouge, La., the first time Frese led the Terps to the Big Dance. Last year, Langhorne had a career performance, netting 29 points to go with a career-high 22 rebounds in a 70-65 win in Florida.
Miami comes into the contest with a 14-6 record and 4-3 in the ACC. The Hurricanes are coming off an upset of then-No. 25 Virginia Tech, 77-62. Their four conference victories matches last season's total.
Tickets for Wednesday night's contest are still available for purchase either at www.umterps.com or by calling the Comcast Center Ticket Office at 1-800-IMA-TERP.
