COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The sixth-ranked Terrapins women's basketball team opens conference play on Thursday, Jan. 5 at 7 p.m. at #19/21 Boston College, who will be playing their first-ever ACC contest. It will be the first-ever meeting between the teams, as some of the league's top post players take to the floor.
Looking for its 10-straight win of the season, Maryland (13-1) is 20-8 all-time in conference openers. The Terps open with the ACC newcomer for the second-straight year, traveling to Virginia Tech last season to open the 2004-05 conference slate.
Thursday's game will pit some of the ACC's top post players. Sophomore Crystal Langhorne (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro) is ranked sixth in the conference with 15.2 points per game and is third in rebounds per game with 8.8. Brooke Queenan leads BC with 14.6 ppg and 9.6 rpg, which ranks ninth and second, respectively, in the conference. Queenan, who was named ACC Player of the Week this week, leads the conference with seven double-doubles on the season, just one more than Langhorne.
Maryland will once again look to its balanced scoring to overcome the Eagles, who recently defeated then-No. 14 Stanford, 77-69. The Terps have six players averaging double digits as at least four players have scored in double figures in all but two games.
Pacing the offense is junior Shay Doron (Great Neck, N.Y./Christ the King). She is averaging 16.9 ppg and is shooting a career-best 50 percent from three-point range. Close behind is freshman Marissa Coleman's (Cheltenham, Md./St. John's College [D.C.]) 16.5 ppg. Coleman, who is this week's ACC Rookie of the Week, is second in the nation in three-point shooting at 62.9 percent. The team's 46.2 shooting percentage from long range is the best in the nation.
Maryland's WMUC radio will broadcast the game. Fans can listen to a live feed by logging onto www.umterps.com. The Terps return to Comcast Center to face the No. 2 team in the nation when Duke visits on Sunday, Jan. 8 at 1 p.m. The game will be televised on the ACC's Regional Sports Network (Comcast SportsNet, Fox Sports South and Sun Sports). Tickets can be purchased at the Comcast Center Ticket Office at 1-800-IM-A-TERP or online at www.umterps.com.
