COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Maryland men's soccer standout Jason Garey will travel to St. Louis for the Missouri Athletic Club (M.A.C.) Hermann Trophy presentation Friday, Jan. 6. The winner will be announced live on ESPNews at 7 p.m. Garey, Maryland's all-time leading scorer who helped the Terps to the 2005 NCAA title, is one of three finalists up for college soccer's most prestigious award.
The M.A.C. Hermann Trophy is regarded as college soccer's version of the Heisman Trophy and over the years has honored some of American soccer's biggest stars like Mia Hamm, Claudio Reyna, Kristine Lilly, Tony Meola and Alexi Lalas.
No Maryland Terrapin has ever won the award. The last finalist was Sumed Ibrahim in 2003.
The top three men's finalists and top three women's finalists will attend the banquet and the announcement of the winners will take place at a news conference Friday evening at the Missouri Athletic Club. The news conference will air live on ESPNews at 7 p.m.
The three finalists for the men's award are Garey, Brian Plotkin from Indiana University and Jeff Rowland from the University of New Mexico.
Garey led the nation in 2005 with 22 goals and 51 points. He set Maryland records for career goals (60) and career points (140). During his career, the Terps went to four College Cups, won an ACC Tournament title and captured two ACC regular season crowns. The consensus All-America selection was already named Player of the Year by Soccer America and TopDrawerSoccer.com.
