ASHBURN, Va. - Former University of Maryland kicker Nick Novak, a four-year letterwinner and the all-time leading scorer in ACC history, signed Tuesday with the Washington Redskins.
Novak ('04) returns to the D.C. area for his second stint with the team, after playing a portion of the 2005 schedule in Washington. His signing brings the total number of former Terps who are now active NFL players to 19.
While with the Redskins, Novak was the hero in two separate games. In the Redskins' victory at Dallas, he kicked the deciding PAT for the 14-13 win, as well as making a key tackle on special teams in the game. In the 'Skins win over Seattle two games later, Novak drilled a 39-yard attempt through the uprights to seal a 20-17 overtime victory.
Novak completed the year as a kicker for the Arizona Cardinals, and finished the season with 39 points, including 8-for-10 on field goals.
As a member of the Terrapins from 2001-2004, he made his mark upon the record books, finishing his career in College Park with 393 points, connecting on 80-of-107 field goal attempts and 153-of-159 PATs. That tally left him atop the ACC record book for scoring, as well as the second-most field goals in NCAA history. Novak was a member of the ACC championship squad in 2001, as well as the Chick-fil-A Peach and Toyota Gator Bowl winning teams of 2002 and 2003, respectively.
