NEW YORK, N.Y. - Junior midfielder Maurice Edu is featured in the October 23 edition of Sports Illustrated, appearing in the publication's "Faces in the Crowd" section. SI recognized Edu for his two game-winning goals against Loyola and Duke on September 26 and 29, respectively. With a goal yesterday afternoon in Maryland's 4-0 win against Albany, Edu now has four goals on the season, all of which have come on headers beginning with a Graham Zusi cross.
Edu, a native of Fontana, Calif., scored both of those goals in very similar fashion. Against Loyola, Zusi took the ball down the right side of the pitch. He fired a cross to the far side of the box to an awaiting Drew Yates. Yates took the cross on his head and redirected the pass to the middle of the box. Edu, who was making a run down the center of the box, knocked home a header to the right side of the net to give the Terps a 1-0 edge in the 61st minute.
Against the Blue Devils in front of a national audience on Fox Soccer Channel, Edu notched the game-winner in the 14th minute in front of a record crowd of 6,489. After freshman Jeremy Hall forced a corner kick, Zusi stepped to the ball and delivered a beautiful pass to the middle of the box. Edu was able to get a head on the ball and put a shot past the Duke keeper for the win.
Edu was also named Soccer America Player of the Week and College Soccer News placed him on its National Team of the Week for his performance in the two matches.
Edu has scored two more goals in the last two matches against Hartwick and Albany. Edu notched his third game-winning header of the season in the 1-0 win versus the Hawks on October 19. He also added another goal yesterday in the 4-0 victory against the Great Danes.
The Terps will host their final two matches of the season beginning with Bucknell on Tuesday night at Ludwig Field. Maryland will then take on ACC counterpart Virginia Tech on Friday night at Ludwig. Both matches are scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
