COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Sophomore keeper Chris Seitz was named the 2006 Defensive Player of the Year and Jeremy Hall was tabbed the Freshman of the Year as the ACC announced its All-Conference teams today. Seitz and junior Maurice Edu were both placed on the All-ACC first team and junior Stephen King was put on the second team. The Terps also had three players named to the All-Freshman team, the most of any other school.
Hall is the first player in Maryland history to earn Freshman of the Year accolades since the award began in 1990. Hall and classmates Omar Gonzalez and Jason Herrick were all placed on the All-Freshman team. Maryland is the only team that has three rookies on the squad. Wake Forest is the only other team to earn multiple bids with two.
Seitz earned Defensive Player of the Year honors for anchoring the Maryland backline which has racked up nine shutouts in 14 wins. He has put together a fantastic sophomore campaign with a goals against average of 0.71 and a save percentage of .774. His record of 13-2-1 this season improves his career mark to 26-3-3 in his first two seasons. In the Terps' 2-1 win against Virginia Tech, Seitz was crucial as he stopped a career-high eight shots.
Hall has provided a huge boost to the Terrapins' attack in his first year in College Park. He is second on the team with six goals and has added three assists for 15 points, which is third on the squad. Hall has started to get hot at the right time heading into tournament action with a goal against both Albany and Bucknell and adding an assist in the season finale against Virginia Tech.
Eight of Edu's 13 points this season have come in the last four wins for Maryland, scoring three goals and adding a pair of assists in that span. Overall, he is fourth on the team with five goals and 13 points. He has also notched four game-winning goals for the Terrapins, all in one-goal games. Edu earned Soccer America Player of the Week honors on October 4 for his two-game winning headers against Loyola and Duke.
King has started all 68 games since he arrived on campus in 2004. He leads the team with seven assists and is second with six goals and 19 points. King exploded against UCLA on September 2 when he scored a goal and assisted on two others. For his effort, he was named the College Soccer News National Player of the Week. In the win against the Hokies, King had a hand in both of Maryland's goals with a goal and an assist in leading the Terps to the win.
Gonzalez has been a critical part of the Maryland defense as one of the starting center backs. He is just one of three Terps to have started all of Maryland's 18 games so far this season. In addition to his strong defensive work in the back, he is a valuable asset on attack with a goal and two assists. His first career goal came in Maryland's 4-1 win against Bucknell on October 24.
Herrick has played and started in 13 games this season and has five goals and two assists. He notched a goal in three-straight games against Mount St. Mary's, NC State, and Penn State, all Maryland victories. Herrick provided a quick answer about where goals would come from early in the season when recorded three points in Maryland's first three matches.
Maryland, the No. 4 seed in the ACC Men's Soccer Championship, will take on No. 5 Boston College on Wednesday, November 1 at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Germantown. The Terps will play in the last match of the day, scheduled to begin at 8:00 p.m.
