COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Second-ranked Maryland field hockey advances to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the 12th-straight year after defeating 17th-ranked Richmond, 4-0, at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex on Saturday afternoon. The Terrapins play Penn State in the second round on Sunday, Nov. 12 at 2 p.m. in College Park.
The game was scoreless for most of the first half as Richmond (17-5) reeled off three of its four shots for the game in the opening five minutes of the game. On one of those shots, the Spiders nearly took a 1-0 lead, but Maryland All-ACC performer Kristina Edmonds (Emmaus, Pa.) came up with the defensive save to keep the game at 0-0.
Before the end of the half, however, the Terps (20-2) took a 1-0 edge. Freshman Ameliet Rischen (Rotterdam, Netherlands) fired off a shot from the top of the circle to give them the 1-0 lead with less than two minutes left in the first half.
In the second stanza, the Terps added a pair of early goals from junior Janneke van Leeuwen (Hilversum, Netherlands) and freshman Alexis Pappas (Mount Joy, Pa.) to pad the lead and take a 3-0 cushion.
Senior Susie Rowe (London, England) capped the afternoon with her 12th goal of the season at 66:07.
For the first time in school history, Maryland has posted back-to-back 20-win seasons and the sixth in the history of the program.
The Terps take on the Nittany Lions in the second round on Sunday, Nov. 12 at 2 p.m. at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Tickets can be purchased at the field. Parking for the event is free.
