MISSION, Kan. - Junior midfielders Maurice Edu and Stephen King and sophomore keeper Chris Seitz were all named to the 2006 NSCAA/adidas All-South Atlantic Team, announced today. Edu and Seitz were placed on the first team while King was a second team selection.
Edu was a steady presence for the Terps as the defensive midfielder and came up with important goals when Maryland needed them most. Edu recorded four game-winning goals during the season with three of them coming in 1-0 wins. In 1-0 victories against Loyola and Duke on September 26 and 29, respectively, he scored both of the game-winning goals off of headers. He was named Soccer America Player of the Week for his performance following those matches. Edu did the same thing on October 19 when he knocked in his third game-winning header against Hartwick. In the Terps' 2-1 win against Virginia Tech on senior day, he scored the eventual game-winner in the 28th minute. Edu notched five goals and four assists for 14 points this season and was an All-ACC first team honoree.
Seitz was tabbed the ACC Defensive Player of the Year for anchoring the Maryland backline which racked up 10 shutouts in 16 wins. He put together a fantastic sophomore campaign with a goals against average of 0.66 and a save percentage of .816. His record of 15-4-1 this past season improved his career mark to 28-5-3 in his first two seasons in College Park. In the Terps' 2-1 win against Virginia Tech on October 27, Seitz was crucial as he stopped a career-high eight shots. He then matched that mark in Maryland's 1-0 win against Boston College in the ACC Tournament on November 1.
King has been a mainstay in the Maryland midfield since he stepped foot on campus in 2004, starting all 72 games he has played in since his arrival. King led the Terps with seven assists, was second on the team with 19 points, and was third with six goals. He notched back-to-back game-winning goals in wins against UCLA and Louisville on September 2 and 4, respectively. His one goal and two assists performance against the Bruins earned him College Soccer News National Player of the Week and ACC Player of the Week accolades. King was an All-ACC second team selection this year and was also an ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America third team selection.
