COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland wrestling team heads to the road for the first dual of a six-match road swing when it travels to Lexington, Va. to take on VMI at Cocke Hall on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. The Terrapins are 4-3 in dual competition this season while this is the first dual for VMI.
Maryland is coming off of a 27-12 loss to No. 18 Nebraska last Saturday at the Comcast Pavilion. Senior Jason Kiessling, redshirt freshman Hudson Taylor, and freshman Mike Letts each won their respective matches against the Cornhuskers. Kiessling beat No. 12 Marc Harwood by decision, 10-6, to improve to 9-3 on the season.
Taylor earned his team-best fourth fall this year when he pinned Nick Schaefer in the first period to improve to 8-3. Letts won by decision at 174 pounds, 3-1, to earn his team-leading 10th win of the season.
VMI has wrestled in three tournaments so far this season. At its own Rat Fall Brawl on November 4, Lance Long (125), Brandon Franklin (141), and Adam Underwood (165) all won their brackets. The Keydets also had four other wrestlers place in the top four. At the Pembroke Classic on November 11, seven wrestlers placed in the top four but VMI did not have a tournament winner. Finally, at the Keystone Classic last weekend, the Keydets finished ninth out of 10 teams as heavyweight Scott Buhman placed second and Sam Alvarenga finished third at 149.
In the Terps' 26-15 victory against VMI in College Park last year, sophomore James Knox won by major decision, 11-3, against Lam Ly and senior Jerry Afari pinned Kyle Elgert at 197.
